LEJOG Day 12 – The Chequered Flag

It was up early for the final assault from Golspie to John O Groats. After 11 days all of us were ready physically, mentally and emotionally to get the job done! Our B&B hosts had warned us of the BerryHill Braes, a series of hills on our route to JoG but we were still unprepared for the steep climbs we faced in the first 30 miles of our final day. We certainly earned our lunch in Wick and the relative ease of the final 25 miles or so to JoG.

We made it to JoG around 3pm after a 70 mile day. Gary was on hand with a bottle of bubbly which was downed sharpish.

The final stats

975 miles (we are rounding that up to 1,000)

53,000 feet of climb (we think thats nearly 2x Everest)

67.5 hours in the saddle (thats a lot of sitting)

And for the cyclists, we averaged just short of 15mph

It has been one helluva journey and we all are sharing in a great sense of accomplishment at what we have achieved. It has had its great moments of joy and the odd tough challenge but overall we have all enjoyed the experience immensely

A few important thank yous

Thanks to Andreas Hubert at Pasculli for the generous donation of the bikes-  they have been superb

Thanks to Stevo and Gary for the fabulous help and support in driving the van and dealing with all the day to day logistics

Thanks to all those who joined us for one or two legs – having you along certainly helped keep the spirits high

Thanks to our sister Gillian for joining us for a few days along the way and looking after us

Thanks to Rodge for the many hours spent in setting out the route and planning the entire event – Martyn and DC are extremely grateful for the time spent – the route was magnificent

And finally, a couple of special thanks

To Charles and Christine at the MS Centre in Edinburgh for hosting us so well on July 7 and for giving us real hope that we can make a difference and beat Multiple Sclerosis

And to all of the people who have supported us along the way. Watching the donations steadily increase as we rode made a massive difference. As of today, we have raised in excess of £20,000 from our ride which is simply fabulous

There will be further short video posts of some of our favourite moments – stay tuned

Thanks again to all – off now for a comfy chair…….
